I think part of it may be that you develop far faster in something new than you do in something that you've had a lot of practice with. So you will be learning beginner techniques and the like much faster than the latest stuff you've been working on in aikido.

The fact that aikido and kenjutsu have the same roots would also help you learn kenjutsu faster now than you originally learned aikido of course, as you mentioned.
