Though I am in no way a student of religion, your mention of Asclepius reminded me of a possible connection to worms. Essentially, the winding of Guinea worms became Asclepius' symbol of medicine. Over time, these tiny worms became serpents simply because no one remembered that the staffs had to, of course, display worms large enough to see.
