Josh and I do want to get in on this. When do you need the info by

For sure we want Arkham Horror, Red Dragon Inn, and Dominion. I think Josh has some books he would like as well.

The sooner, the better. Pickup date is March 6th, so you still have a little while, though!

I'll add those to the list along with my stuff: I'm going to Fandom II this afternoon to look at what to buy.

Add in Exalted: Graceful Wicked Masques by White Wolf. Since it just came out last week they should hopefully still have it in stock.

There is a new edition of the base game which might be available, but expansions haven't been published for it as far as I know. The old version is extremely unlikely to be obtainable.

Should I put you down for a copy?

If enough of us wish for it very hard. maybe we can shift reality enough for them to put it back into print!

if it's not too late, I actually just want a copy of Carcassone.

I know I am getting back to you late however. If it can be added, please do so. By preference, I also want the River, Inns and Cathedrals, and traders and builders (I know there are more, I am just keeping it modest for now). I think the river usually comes with the main set now...I think. Not sure whether the others are seperate boxes or not.

It's not too late; I'll add it to the list. There is a River which comes with the base game, and there is a River 2 expansion, if you're interested.

I've got a list of things I would like:

- Power Grid Power Plant Deck 2
- Ys
- Ys+ (Expansion to Ys... only if Ys is acquirable)
- Tichu (2 Copies please)
- Acquire
- Thurn and Thaxis - All Roads lead to Rome
- Thurn and Thaxis - Power and Glory
- Race for the Galaxy

I also have some RPG books that I would like, but I need to check which I own.

From: [identity profile] green-ogre.livejournal.com

Yes, I already have the Thurn and Thaxis base game.

Do you know if they re-issued TransAmerica and included vexation?

I had heard they had done so. If so, can you add that to my list also.

Do you know perchance if those wacky Icehouse pyramid things can be ordered through Fandom or does one need to get them direct from the source?

From: [identity profile] ironphoenix.livejournal.com

They might be, but I bet you have to call them something other than those wacky Icehouse pyramid things.

Bah it turns out they are called something silly like

Icehouse Rainbow Treehouse set. If I'm interested in buying them, I am interested in buying 5 sets, but it depends on the pre-discount unit price.

Dagibbs has some. apart from being intrinsically interesting because they are colourful little pyramids, [livejournal.com profile] akawil suggested that I should use them to play Martian chess.

Hey, Mike, I've got an actual serious Christian theological question I'd like your opinion on - and it has *nothing* to do with me or my opinions on the matter, AND I promise not to bring them up after this sentence.

It has to do with Christianity and role-playing games.

The question is this: Jesus often spoke in parables and gave his teachings in that context. Is it blasphemous (or in any way otherwise unacceptable) to do so yourself - imparting Christian stories and values via parable?

And, in the specific case I'm looking at, would you consider an RPG setting where the teachings of Jesus were referenced and analogies were made, but there were still fundamental differences, a la "Chronicles of Narnia", to be an acceptable way of teaching?

(I'm not implying "only" way of teaching - I'm saying, using the Gospel modified to fit a fantasy setting in an RPG as a parable to allow people to come to it themselves, in the same way that Christ's parables led his followers along)

For reference, the discussion is coming from a Baptist perspective. I know you're Catholic, but I'm still curious.

From: [identity profile] ironphoenix.livejournal.com

To my way of thinking, there's nothing wrong with this at all. Because allegory is open to interpretation, it involves people more deeply, inviting them to form their own thoughts on things by asking leading questions. It's been a favorite teaching tool of many fine folks going back at least to Socrates. An RPG being even more interactive than a story, it strikes me that it would be a pretty effective way of doing this. Dialogues, formalized to differing degrees, also have a respectable pedigree both within and outside the church.

All of that said, the essence of fundamentalism is that dogma trumps individual interpretation. Thus, I wouldn't be surprised if a Baptist saw this very differently... not to say that there aren't Catholic fundamentalists, but I think it's more solidly the party line in the evangelical denominations.

From: [identity profile] theweaselking.livejournal.com

What's funny to me is that one of the "defining characteristics" of Baptism, according to Wikipedia, is that the individual must be allowed to study scripture and come to individual conclusions.

But yeah. Online discussion about Christ in RPGs, where the side that isn't me was arguing that RPGs that weren't explicitly Christian and correct in every detail were misleading and could lead to demonic influence if you weren't careful, and I was all "Dude, Jesus spoke in parable. Constantly."

Anyway, thanks for your take on things.

From: [identity profile] ironphoenix.livejournal.com

That emphasis on being correct in every detail because people can't be trusted with anything not literal and exact? Yeah, that's not me.
