Although I've never heard voices physically while fully awake, I have done so in hypnogogic states (just before and just after sleep) and also had internal dialogues with them. My experiences there jive with what the article is talking about: i.e., that when I take the time to really listen to, engage with and respect an angry inner voice, its anger subsides.
