So a new Thai fast food chain, Thai Express, has claimed spots in several Ottawa malls (Rideau, St. Laurent, Bayshore), and lo, it is good.

It's a pretty well-organized, large operation: there were 7 people visible behind the counter in a quite confined space, and they seemed to not get in each other's way. Food was fresh, ample, and flavorful. It's slightly more expensive than many other places: instead of $7.50 or so, a large lunch with drink is around $9.20, tax in.

From what I can tell, it appears to be run by Chinese people: it sounded to me like the working language behind the counter was Cantonese.

Pad thai, tom yum, curries, stir fries... so far, all good. The only complaint I have is that the spring rolls are more Chinese than Thai.

They're all over Montreal in the malls. They're fairly good, quick, and inexpensive.

I don't remember the name, but it sounds like it might be the same place where I had thai food in Winnipeg. It was pad thai and in a little take-out box thing with handles. A bit more expensive but really good!

I don't think the take-out box I got had handles, but the pad thai was excellent.

Winnipeg seems like an up-and-coming city, from what I recall seeing when I was there 15 and 5 years ago.

I went to the one in the Rideau Centre and it is the same place. They have take-out boxes that are black and neon pink and green. They have one metal handle. Funny how certain specific things make impressions, somewhat out of context! I vaguely remembered that the handles were unusual, but couldn't remember why... metal handles just seemed unlikely to me.

I'll be going to Winnipeg the end of May for a couple days... I might try to look for the place again but there are a few options that I wouldn't mind trying again.

Totally off topic: Do you remember a guy called Art Jordan in highschool? He said he was there from '85-87, so I don't think you would know him, but I'm curious. I know him from work... first time he saw me he asked if I went to GHS and I can't understand why he would ask that if there was such a difference in years (I'm 91-96). I'm curious enough to ask you though!

Well, now that you can get it in Ottawa, you might as well go to the places that are only in Winnipeg, I guess. As I recall, there's an Arby's there, while there aren't any in Ottawa.

Art Jordan? Nope, I don't recall him; I'm 87-92. There was a Mr. Jordan who taught there, so maybe it's his dad, and he mentioned you?
