Offtopic but gaming question:

There is soemthing work-related I need to do between 15:30 and 16:00 on Saturday.

I can do it remotely with my laptop if you have either wireless or otherwise don't mind me plugging into the wired net briefly to connect to my VPN?

Otherwise I will just duck out midafternoon, go home (or to work, whichever seems closer), and then come back and game.

Hm. We have a machine hooked up to a DSL modem, but I don't know what has to happen to be able to connect your laptop instead (we don't have a router in the link); I'll ask S. about it tonight.

I suppose it depends on whether the modem is expecting things like a specific mac address from your PC, whether your modem assigns the IP and DNS info dynamically or whether I would have to first copy it from your machine.

It's not a big deal if I have to duck out quickly. In fact as my manager observed, it probably isn't a big deal if I ignore it. I h ave one system I need to shut off cleanly remotely before the hosts power it off, but 99 times out of 100 if I just let them crash the system it should still come up fine.

IP is dynamic. I use set nameservers but I'm pretty sure our ISP will supply dynamic ones. The only information you should need is username and password (this is PPPOE), which I can provide.
