Weekend!

Well, that was a pretty good weekend!

Friday, we got together for dinner, dessert and wandering around with M.L., S.P. (yes ziggy_b, that S.P.) and his wife G. It was great to see them, since S. and G. don't visit often (they live in Bilbao, in Basque Country).

Saturday, I hosted boardgames, and got a pretty good crowd: beable, jagash, black_cat11, her friend A., niall_, donnav, M.M., iclysdale, ranisilath, and A. and J. from the Strategy Club came by at various times. We played Caylus, Settlers of Catan, Crokinole, Igel Argern, Mao, and Betrayal at House on the Hill. M.M.'s crokinole board is crazy fast now that he's using an anti-friction wax powder (actually like tiny wax ball-bearings)... pieces glide as though it were an air hockey table, and we had to shim the table legs to level it so that the pieces wouldn't drift.

Sunday, I went to the 9 A.M. aikido class for the first time in a few years. It was a great class, although I had to be careful about hydration, since my body isn't used to that kind of workout before noon. In the afternoon, I did a bit of housework, then soul_diaspora and I went walking and birdwatching around the Jack Pine Trail and the Beaver Trail, and took the evening together.

This week, I'm up for doing things with people Wednesday and/or Friday evening, although I want to fit in aikido on at least one of those.

I poked a couple of people and so far no one's claimed Wednesday for time. Also, the last two errands are two that I can do while meeting up with you.

My reading "Cryptonomicon" is telling me that I need to improve my geekdom in order to better pass in my crowd of friends. That makes me feel that an evening of Magic: the Gathering sounds like a possibility...please try not to let me chicken out.

I don't doubt it's in both, but I think it's more indicative of actor than role.

I always thought that friction was part of the point in a croquignole game. I'd have to completely re-invent a play style in his board then! Did it make it easier to clear other pucks off the board?

I'm doing ok. This is a public post, so I'll just say that things went as well as possible under the circumstances, which while not necessarily as good as I might have hoped or wanted, it could definitely have been a lot worse. There may be another sudden trip in my future, but right now it's looking like I'll be here for at least a week. I'd love to get together.

Huh, how is he doing? Is he happy? Everyone was describing him as gaunt the last time we saw him (several years ago now) and he didn't seem to be full of energy like he used to be. People change, such is life, I just hope he is happy.

He does seem to be rather more his chipper self again, which is good to see. He's still much slimmer than he was, but he seems at ease with it now. I suspect that there was some considerable stress back a few years, but that's purely my conjecture.
