5.10b and 5.9 are not that far apart, actually. If it had been "5.6 tops", that would have said more.

True, but I haven't seen people sandbag ratings quite that much.

I guess that traveling as you do, you see a very wide variation in ratings; I'm thinking more of people who know each other and have the same "reference scale".

I've finished a 5.11a in a Nevada gym, and about the same in California. I've failed on a 5.8 in a Connecticut gym. Those were both while I was climbing at about the same strength, in fact I might have been climbing a bit stronger in Connecticut. That's 6 ranks different -- 5.6 to 5.10b is only 5 ranks different. :)
